Cortisol and adrenaline are hormones released as a response from the nervous system when there is a threat. The responsibility of these hormones is to rouse the body and ready it for emergency action. The physical response to a feeling of threat or when the balance is upset is called stress. The ability to tolerate stressful situations depends on a number of factors. These are genetics, quality of relationships, general outlook on life, and emotional intelligence. The tolerance is also influenced by some things like a persons network of support. If one has some really supportive friends and family members who make up a strong network, they are at a better position of dealing with life stressors.

A sense of control also helps boost the tolerance level. Self-confidence, ability to persevere challenges and influence events makes it easier to deal with stressful situations. Other things include a persons outlook and attitude, preparation and knowledge and ability to deal with emotions. The causing pressures and situations are called stressors.

Stressors are usually thought of as negative for instance a hard relationship or a work schedule that is exhausting. But those situations that force you to adjust or put demands on you are also stressful. These can be positive events like receiving a promotion, buying a house, getting married or going to college. To some extent stressors depend on your perception. What can be stressful to you may not be to someone else. For example being stuck in traffic may cause you tension and anxiety while to somebody else its a relaxing trip and perfect time to listen to music.

Stressors are not only external, they can also be caused by the affected person. These include talking to yourself negatively, lacking assertiveness, pessimism, perfectionism, unable to accept uncertainty and impossible expectations.
