This article is about my work as a DJ mentor here in Swindon, but should prove useful to some existing DJ’s and those aspiring to become established too. First I’ll tell you a little bit about my background and why I got involved in DJ mentoring and then I’ll run through a few key insights that distinguish an established DJ from those indulging their hobby.

I began DJing at a very young age. In my early teens a local DJ gave me ‘an apprenticeship’ and took me under his wing as he did gigs around Swindon and Wiltshire. It wasn’t long before I developed the skills and competency to have series of jobs were subcontracted to me. And very quickly I began DJing at local festivals, roller-disco’s and other parties. The buzz of being a local DJ changed my life.

In my 20’s I began to explore other career opportunities and began working with NEETs. NEETs stand for teenagers ‘Not In Education, Employments or Training’. Here I began to teach disaffected youth basic English and Maths and enabling them to take their first steps toward employment. It was a natural cross-over then, for me think about offering DJ Mentoring to aspiring DJ’s.

The opening salvo of my training is teaching aspiring DJ’s fundamentals. In other words I teach them the significance of be sure their equipment is PAT tested and that they are insured for any gigs they work on. Being a true pro from the outset is a must; there is a real distinction between family friends with a hobby and a trained, and qualified professional at the decks.

Beyond the fundamentals we look at tailoring the music to the taste of the audience. This however, is an art form learnt with experience and perhaps the basis of another article. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
